Following the July2 fiasco, my 140 was sent to TX Service Center on July 10, received by them on July 11.
Not received Receipt notice yet. Anyone else who filed with TxSC in July get a receipt yet? Does only the lawfirm get a receipt or also the employer? How long has it been taking TxSC to send receipt notice in the month of July? llot of discussion about NSC but I didn't see any mention of TXSC.
My lawyer tells me there may be some clarification from USCIS next week about filing 485 with just a receipt number (from a cleared check) or with proof of Fedex delivery; for now confusion prevails about whether or not such a 485 application will be rejected. Lawyer is not sure if cleared checks will reach them before 4 weeks from the bank. They don't seem able/willing to find the eCopies of the checks on the bank website. Some people mentioned employer sends the check, i think the lawfirm does?

It's important to hold the meeting soon as IV core is planning major actions in the coming days. It's highly critical to get organized ASAP without any further delay. There'll be future meetings soon, if there are major actions planned in coming days. Those who miss the event (due to unavoidable circumstances) can attend future meetings which can be held in Farmington Hills, Novi, Flint etc. based on participation.
I have no issues driving to Novi, Farmington Hills, Novi or Lansing for that matter. When I can go all the way to DC, I can drive anywhere in MI to attend the meeting. The idea behind choosing Troy is that majority of participants need not travel long distance to accomodate one or two members. As of now majority is from Oakland County. If it turns out that majority is from Lansing, Flint, Canton... wherever, I'll drive down there.
There's no need to feel left out if any are from far off places (Lansing etc.) and can't drive down to Troy. You can participate by calling the cell numbers of the participants (if any of you PM me, I can give mine). However, members living nearby need to appear in person (cell-phone participation will not be entertained)

It is amusing to see that there are quite a few people who want the very door closed that they used to enter. It is even more amusing to see that the fault is always someone elses. It is similar to all the people who are opposed to immigration because it is someone elses fault that they are losing their job. Down right funny :p.
We need to focus on solving our problems without blaming others for our problems. Because once we go down that lane, we are no better than anyone from NumbersUSA or any other organization/ people who are against immigration. It is OK if we do not support increasing H1B - but saying that the H1B program needs to shutdown is not correct. 2) It is certain that we would be able to get USCIS to waive the $5k fee... but it would take time.
3) If we pay up and they make the program... we need a way so that we can request the reports at regular intervals... after all once the report is prepared, it is available and we should be able to make use of it.
4) A better idea might be to pay the $5k, but instead ask them to make an API.. to which one can we can supply the boundary priority dates using a RESTful service. If we are gonna give money.. we better get the restrained control in our hands. This will help future applicants.

Does any one know how much IV collets in recurring contributions? How much did we collect for the DC rally and how much did we spend?
San Jose was a local CA event planned almost spontaneously. DC was an event planned months in advance. People were offered Free ride, Free plane fare, Free food (in Gurdwaras). Yet how many participated?
I have been refraining from posting on this point, as I wouldn't like to belittle the contributions of the strong team from California and the numbers they brought to the rally.
But let's face it. CA has more EB immigrants than the next three. Look at the recent 2006 Performance report from DoL (available at Mathew Oh website). CA had 21,000+ labor petitions compared to NY - 7,000, NJ - 7,000(?) , TX - 5000. As you can see CA scores more than the next three states put together.
If 40 people participate from NY, it's as good as 120 from Cal. Percentagewise it would be the same. If 40 peope walk in Michigan ( 2000 Labor petitions) statistically it would surpass CA, percentagewise.
It's a known thing that only 5%-10% of the population participates actively in the most successful movements be it American Revolution or struggle for Indian Independence. We haven't reached that critical mass yet ( at the regional level)
There is an enthusiasm right now. But how long before the fatigue sets in? Rallies need to be minimal, held with certain strategic target and should serve some specific purpose.
Weekend rallies attracting bigger crowds is a myth. Be prepared to listen to reasons like - Shucks I have to mow the lawn, take kids to Bharatanatyam dance classes, I have relatives over for lunch etc.
With that logic if we hold rallies over the LONG weekends, we should attract bigger crowd, since people have 2-3 days to relax afterwards. And since people already plan to visit Orlando, LA etc to visit Disneyland, Universal etc., if we can hold rallies there we should attract the highest possible crowd. Do you think my idea will work?
I agree with you 100%. Question is - who'll bell the cat? Who will take the lead and sacrifice their time, family life etc. to plan, organize and conduct these?
We need a fearless leader like Aman Kapoor, who can motivate and inspire people to participate, in every state. Where can we find them?
How about taking this to the next step and hire paid fulltime staff who can
1) call people and request donations
2) organize meetings
3) stimulate the local chapters
4) promote IV
..... and the list can go on.....and do all the things necessary to convert all propects to customers.
How about having full time offices in DC? This office will run on donations.
Finally, how about instead of anonymous members make this a place where everyone has to provide their personal details etc.
Anyways, I am just ranting.

Sorry for late jumping on this old topic. But, applied for SSN for my wife and got it in mail. Now what? My taxes for last year were applied in feb this year. How can I tell IRS that my wife got SSN now and she is eligible for Stimulus package?
Can I claim this amount next year when I file my taxes?

When I got laid off, my lawyer at the time told me that technically you are out of status as soon as you leave payroll. There was no such thing as a "grace period". I was advised to change my visa status to B2 (I think it was that) with immediate effect, if I could not find a new job within 2 weeks to complete an H1B "transfer". It isn't exactly a transfer of the visa, but what you would do normally when you are changing employers whilst on H1 B. My I-140 was filed on July 9, 2007, USCIS received it on July 10, 2007. Just heard from lawyer that they received my 140 receipt. The date on the receipt is July 16, 2007. My I-140 was sent to NSC.

It seemed a lot harder than I imagined, I think I need to work on my introduction and smile ;) All three folks looked scared and suspicious of me but atleast they signed! Not giving up hope though! I have some others in the works via some good friends and I am going to try and tap more immigration law firms in SF. I am still pledging 200 and hope for more!! Any tips on campaigning to strangers, and I will be set! Thanks guys.
